force winds and bearing some cities in more than 2 feet of snow. >>> and the manhunt underway in southern california. police say chris dorner is armed and dangerous. first, though, let's keep you updated on the massive blizzard. you have to look at how big this storm really is. check out the image from space, nasa is the one that provides this to us. the storm looks like a hurricane. and it's packing winds like a hurricane, 65 miles per hour or more in some places. that wind when you combine it with heavy snow is knocking out power. this morning, more than 650,000 homes and businesses across nine states now have no electricity and more than half of those are in massachusetts alone. we now know the storm has claimed at least one person's life. police say someone died in a storm-related crash in poughkeepsie, new york, please be careful if you're out traveling. also the storm has caused more than 1,700 flights to be canceled today. and that number is certainly expected to increase. there will be no flights out of boston's logan until at least sunday. it's a similar story at new

are in constant communication with a man holding a 5-year-old in an underground bunker in midland city, alabama. george howell is there. police came out with new details what items the suspect jimmy lee dikes is giving the child. what are they? >> we just heard from the sheriff here, wally olson. he said a few interesting things. we learned that mr. dykes has electric heater and blankets. certainly it's cold in the bunker, about a constant 50 degrees in that bunker underground. they're still able to get the young boy medications he needs. he suffers from asperger's syndrome and dhd. also able to get him the crayons and coloring book. also toys. and there was another interesting thing that i noticed in this particular press conference. when the sheriff said that he wanted to thank mr. dykes, listen to this. >> he's told us that he has a lk heater and blankets inside that he's taking care of him. he's also allowed us to provide coloring books, medication, toys, and i want to thank him for taking care of our child. that's very important. >> reporter: again, he wanted to thank him for taking care o

's an incomplete pass. so we have these two storms that have to merge right off the coast of new york city. if it happens, we have quite an historic event that's going on. here's where the snow is right now. milwaukee and the like. here's where the rain is. this is the big rainmaker for the southeast. could be inches in places that have quite a bit of rain already. here goes the rain up the east coast. red spots there. that's 6 to 10 inches of rainfall along the northeast along the atlantic coast from bloomington up to parts of delaware. but here's where it gets interesting. when that rain gets up here where the cold air will be, that's where the connection has to happen. that's where the storm is going to spin. that's why there's a blizzard watch already. this is 36 hours before this snow even starts. that's why i'm so wishy washy. i can't say 1 to 12 because that's where the computers are. computers for new york city could be 1 inch with mostly rain. i'm going to show you one that will scare you. boston on this computer, 21 inches of snow. i think that's a pretty good number, especially

, kansas, not nashville, tennessee. in kansas city, they picked up 9.2 inches of snowfall. you can still see it for areas like nebraska, minnesota and into wisconsin. chicago, you've picked up about .81 inches of snowfall. that's welcomed but still not a lot. looking at a wintry mix from this last storm system, bringing some of that through to west virginia, ohio, and down through the south our other story is going to be flooding. we'll talk more about that flooding over the next couple of days. see these numbers up towards areas like in minnesota, three inches of snow. down toward regions like tennessee, even into georgia, we're going to see potentially three to six inches of rainfall. you see a line of storms moving through and this is going to continue to pile up. and this means worry going to be dealing with a flood threat over the next couple of days. there's also a chance for some winter weather to move through parts of the northeast. it looks like some new watches and advisories were just issued. it looks like in some locations we could pick up about six inches of snowfall. some l

to a pipe in his basement. kansas city police responsing to a chip from the missouri children's hotline found a 17-year-old boy locked up, appearing frail and hungry. the special needs teen told police he had been locked down there by his parents since september. according to a neighbor, the mother had been telling people that the boy had been out of town. after witnessing prior abuse, neighbors expected something was wrong. >> there were a couple times i came over here after school and he was sleeping on her front porch because they wouldn't let him in the house. it was sad. we cried a lot yesterday. >> three adults are in custody. the boy is in the care of the state now. >>> the boy scouts organization says it needs more time on whether to lift its ban on day troop and scout leaders. they were expected to vote on that proposal yesterday to allow local scout groups to make their own policies, but a decision was put off until the annual meeting in may. the scouts said it was due to the complexity of the issue. >> that will only ramp up the controversy surrounding the issue. >>> a baseba

about measuring cities and states are. we getting better? >> there's only a few programs like that. and those all got started just in the last five or six years when the no child left behind data made it clear that we were failing, particularly in the inner cities. so we need to step up the amount we're doing that. a lot of people when it came to measurement thought it could just be the test scores. and so they made that the measure. it doesn't really tell you as a teacher what you need to improve. it's kind of just a raw measure. and so what we've shown through a lot of research we've gotten involved with is that you've got to have observations in the classroom where you look at how the teacher engages students. you've got to have student surveys. and then combine that with careful use of test scores to not just rank but to be very clear about what part of the practice they need to improve. >> you can check out more with bill gates on this week's "fareed zakaria gps." , that massive gas explosion at a kansas city, missouri, restaurant. today a body was found in the rubble. authorities say it's too early to say if it belongs to a woman working at the restaurant. she hasn't been seen since the palast, but at least 15 others were injured. now, we have obtained surveillance video of the explosion the moment it happened. you're going to notice it on the top corner of the frame. you can just see it there. we're also learning tonight, though, that a utility crew was called into the area to investigate the odor. according to the mayor, the fire department also responded to the call about the odor 50 minutes before the blast, but then left the scene because the utility company said they had everything under control. we reached out to the utility company, a spokesperson says they couldn't verify that version of events, but they are still investigating. >>> tonight, cnn has learned that the army has revoked the promotion of paula broadwell. her involvement with david petraeus led to his resignation. broadwell has been approved to a promotion to lieutenant colonel
